At Burnside Primary School, we are proud to support all children in developing social awareness, strength of character, acceptance of others, and academic confidence. Personal Development is not an added extra – it is woven through everything we do: every interaction, every lesson, every assembly, and every school event.
Our primary aim is to prepare our pupils for the wider world, giving them a strong sense of purpose so they have the confidence to make their voices heard. Through our Personal Development offer, children gain the knowledge, self-assurance, and attributes needed to make informed choices and be a positive influence in their local and global communities.
Our Personal Development curriculum is explicitly built around our school motto, Be Safe, Be Smart, Be Kind, ensuring every pupil is supported to thrive, achieve, and belong.
How Personal Development Reflects Our Values
Be Safe: Children grow up in an increasingly complex world, living their lives seamlessly both on and offline. We equip our pupils with essential skills in risk-management, self-regulation, and critical thinking so they know how to stay physically and mentally healthy, navigate challenges securely, and thrive in an ever-changing world.
Be Smart: We give our learners the tools and knowledge to take care of themselves, manage their personal, social, and academic lives positively, and make informed choices. Through structured PSHE learning, career education, and leadership opportunities, pupils build the resilience and ambition needed to achieve their full potential.
Be Kind: Fostering empathy, mutual respect, and acceptance is central to our ethos. Children learn to value diversity, embrace individual differences, and contribute positively to school and community life, ensuring every child experiences a true sense of belonging.
Core PSHE Themes & Enrichment
Our Personal Development provision is delivered through a rich, progressive PSHE framework centred on three core themes:
Relationships: Building healthy, respectful friendships, understanding boundaries, challenging discrimination, and embracing diversity (including through our 'No Outsiders' framework).
Physical Health & Mental Wellbeing: Understanding how to care for mind and body, developing emotional resilience, and practising healthy life habits.
Living in the Wider World: Exploring economic wellbeing, digital citizenship, career education, and our responsibilities as active citizens in modern Britain.
Extra-Curricular & Pupil Voice
We aim to embrace the varied talents and interests of all our pupils by offering a wide range of extra curricular opportunities, sports clubs, and pupil leadership roles (such as our Reading Leaders, Digital Leaders, Eco-Warriors, and School Council). Club selections and school initiatives are actively guided by pupil voice, empowering our learners to shape their own school experience and develop into confident, well-rounded individuals.
