At Burnside Primary School, we pride ourselves on being a welcoming, nurturing, and inclusive community where every child and adult feels a true sense of belonging. We believe that equality and diversity should permeate all aspects of school life, preparing our pupils to grow into respectful, open-minded, and responsible citizens in modern Britain.
Our commitment to inclusion directly reinforces our core values—be safe, be smart, be kind—and our overarching ethos to help every child thrive, achieve, and belong.
Diversity
At Burnside Primary, diversity means acknowledging, respecting, and celebrating the unique differences that make every individual special. We actively promote mutual respect for each other’s identities, backgrounds, and perspectives. By celebrating diversity within our school and the wider community, we empower our children to appreciate the richness of the world around them and embrace others with empathy and kindness.
Equality
Equality means ensuring that every member of our school community—pupils, parents, staff, governors, and visitors—feels safe, valued, and fully able to participate in school life. We are dedicated to removing barriers to learning and participation so that all children, regardless of their starting point, can fulfil their potential and achieve the best possible outcomes. Equality is the shared responsibility of everyone at Burnside Primary.
The Equality Act 2010 & Protected Characteristics
Our policies and daily practice are grounded in the Equality Act 2010. We explicitly teach our pupils about the nine protected characteristics—age, disability, gender reassignment, marriage and civil partnership, pregnancy and maternity, race, religion or belief, sex, and sexual orientation.
Through our curriculum, children learn that:
We all belong together regardless of our differences.
Everyone should be proud of their unique identity.
Discrimination, unfairness, or prejudice based on protected characteristics is unacceptable and illegal.
Individual needs, beliefs, and backgrounds must be met with understanding and respect.
Driving Inclusion: 'No Outsiders' & Linking Leaders
To ensure equality and inclusion are woven into the fabric of daily school life, we actively embed two key framework initiatives:
'No Outsiders' Curriculum: Integrated within our PSHE provision, the 'No Outsiders' framework uses age-appropriate picture books and structured discussion to teach children that everyone is welcome at Burnside Primary. It provides pupils with the language and confidence to challenge discrimination and celebrate difference in modern society.
Linking Leaders Inclusion Programme: Demonstrating our commitment to leadership in equality, Burnside Primary is part of the 8-month Linking Leaders Inclusion Programme funded by the North East Combined Authority (NECA). This collaborative network connects our staff with regional specialists to continuously refine our inclusive pedagogy, enhance SEND and pastoral support, and ensure our school remains a beacon of inclusive practice.
Equality Information Statement
At Burnside Primary School, we are committed to promoting equality of opportunity for all pupils, staff, parents, and carers. We foster a culture where discrimination on the basis of any protected characteristic or family background is strictly unacceptable. By combining an ambitious curriculum, strong pastoral care, and active community partnerships, we ensure every individual is supported to succeed in a safe, fair, and welcoming environment
