Developing Responsibility

Prefects

At Burnside Primary School, we see our prefects as key members of the school community who help to set a positive example for others. This is a special role reserved for Year 6 pupils and it’s something that many children look forward to throughout their time at Burnside. Becoming a prefect gives pupils the chance to show leadership, take responsibility and support younger children by being positive role models. Each prefect has a specific set of duties, helping the school to run smoothly and demonstrating the values we uphold every day.

The Selection Process

Pupils who would like to become prefects are invited to apply for the role. Their application must be supported, or ‘seconded’, by another pupil who believes they would represent the school well.

Once all applications have been submitted, pupils in Years 5 and 6 vote for their preferred candidates. This process helps children understand how democratic elections work and encourages them to consider what makes an effective leader.

The Head Boy and Head Girl are chosen by staff members. These pupils consistently show exceptional commitment, responsibility and uphold Burnside’s values in everything they do.
