November 2022 Round Ups

Round Up Newsletter

25th November

Today our Eco Warriors kicked off our Switch Off Fortnight energy saving campaign. Over the next two weeks we will be trying to reduce our school electricity usage to save the planet and some money! The children have also been invited to take part in a competition to design a t-shirt with a slogan, message or image that encourages everyone to switch off and save energy. If your child would like to enter then please return all completed designs by Friday 25th November. We hope that the children remember lots of the energy saving tips they have discussed at school to use at home. If you are interested in more information about saving energy, this is the link to MSE’s energy saving tips:

What have the children been learning about in antibullying week?

This week pupils across the school have been thinking about what bullying is and what it isn't. They have also taken part in our anti-bullying discussions and surveys. Most pupils told us they have not been bullied. Some told us that bullying does happen from time to time. But when they tell adults in school adults help to sort it out and it stops. Older pupils have been thinking about the difference between banter and bullying. Pupils across the school have been thinking about using kind words. All pupils have been learning how to get help if others are unkind to them. As antibullying week comes to a close the work in school will carry on. In our values and relationships lessons we will continue our work on being kind and showing respect to one another.

Daft as a Brush charity appeal - Friday 25th November

Each year, Burnside pupils choose 3 charities to support which include: one local charity, one national and one global. This year the pupils have chosen to support Daft as a Brush, World Wildlife Fund and Shelter This term, we are supporting Daft as A Brush. On Friday 25th November, we will be holding a fundraising event. We are asking you to donate any spare change that you have at home to fill a large "Daft As a Brush" stencil which will be drawn on the playground. You will be able to add your coins with your children between 8:30 and 8.45am. Nursery children will be taken by their class teachers during the morning to add coins they may have.

Online Safety Booklet

At Burnside we are dedicated to ensuring our pupils are safe at all times. Our robust online safety curriculum ensures our children are equipped with the skills and knowledge to navigate the on line world safely and responsibility. I have created a booklet which will be given to every child in school. The booklet includes the most up to date information and resources to support you on opening up conversations with your child as well as advice on mitigating risks outside of school. We would appreciate it if you would put aside some time to carefully read our booklet.

It won’t be long until the countdown to Christmas starts to kick in. The calendar on our school website informs you of the events we have planned for this academic year. We have also tried to include a footnote to provide any additional information you require. We update events periodically so please check regularly to keep up to date. Don't forget that you can also set up alerts directly from the Burnside calendar to your device. This will ensure you receive a reminder of all the events.

Burnside Amazing Book Swap

Thank you so much for all the amazing books which were sent into school. All children have now had the opportunity to select a 'new' book which they will bring home tonight. Due to the generous donations and the high quality reading materials we were also able to allow class teachers to pick some books to put into their class libraries. Thank you all very much for your support.

When Should I Take My Child to the Dentist?

Just a gentle reminder to all parents and carers to remember to take your child to the dentist. Following COVID, routine check up appointments may have been forgotten. Wherever possible appointments should be made outside of school times to avoid disruption to your child's learning. The NHS link will provide guidance to support you with your child's oral health. https://www.nhs.uk/live-well/healthy-teeth-and-gums/taking-care-of-childrens-teeth/

Staff Updates

Mrs McCoy (Year 1) is planning to start her maternity leave towards the end of the year. We wish her and her family the very best as they prepare for the arrival of baby number 2. We currently have an advertisement on North East Jobs Northumberland to cover Mrs. McCoy's class until she returns after the birth of her baby. When we appoint a candidate we will let the parents in Year 1 know.

Mrs Glenn, lunchtime assistant, is retiring this month. Mrs. Glenn has worked at the school for over 16 years. She will be missed by us all but we wish her a very happy retirement.

Unfortunately it is increasingly challenging to recruit lunchtime supervisors.

We are receiving far fewer applications for our vacancies than ever before. Should you know anyone who would be interested in the role of Lunchtime supervisor please encourage them to get in touch with us 01670 736052 asking to speak to Mrs McMullen.

14-18 November Anti-Bullying week 2022

Next week (14th-18th November) marks the beginning of Anti-bullying week which is, this year, focusing on the theme, ‘Reach out.’ This theme came about following consultation with teachers and pupils by the Anti-Bullying Alliance which coordinates Anti-Bullying Week every year in England and Wales. Teachers and children wanted a theme that empowered them to do something positive to counter the harm and hurt that bullying causes. Anti-Bullying Week will remind everyone whether it’s in school, at home, in the community or online, to reach out and show each other the support we need.

On Monday, key stage 2 pupils will take part in a live BBC Teach Lesson which will highlight some of the issues around bullying. Teachers will also lead assemblies and class circle times during the week with a focus on Anti-bullying. The school’s Anti-Bullying lead and Wellbeing lead, Mrs Burnip and Mrs Akram

Our best disco yet!

Over 370 children attended our discos last night. I had the pleasure of being able to watch the children at the disco and talk to children this morning and can confirm they had an AMAZING time. I would like to thank all the children for coming along and behaving so well. I would also like to thank my superb staff for staying late to help me supervise the children. (When staff support and give their time straight after school, it often means a very late night for them. They need to take the children's work home to mark or prepare the next days resources often late at night to be ready for lessons this morning). Finally, I would like to thank you, our parents/carers, who carefully read and followed my messages regarding pick up and drop off locations and timings. This enabled things to run smoothly and supported us in keeping all our children safe. I can't wait until our next disco!!!!!!!!
