  • Cost of Living

    Fri 01 Apr 2022

As I am sure you are aware price rises for many household bills are to take effect from today. New research has shown that a third of children worry about their family having enough money. Some of our children have shared their concerns about family finances with their teachers and staff have offered reassurance.

I can't ignore the challenges our families are facing right now and it is important that Burnside doesn't add to these.

Please read the following points which we feel may provide support

    1. We would urge you to check to see if you are eligible for Free School Meals. Not only does this support with the cost of the lunch time meal but gives access to other support we can provide including holiday, before and after school care.
    2. School Uniform - uniform with the school logo is not a requirement. Red sweatshirt and cardigans purchased from high street stores / supermarkets are absolutely acceptable. Should you have any uniform items in good  condition which your child may have outgrown we are happy to accept and can re home.
    3. Expensive branded clothing and trainers will not be permitted. This is to avoid peer pressure to have the latest branded goods, which again puts pressure on families.
    4. During COVID it was not possible to take the children on educational visits. Now, although museums and other places of educational interest have re opened the costs have soared. We will only ever suggest a visit if we feel children's learning will be disadvantaged without it. If an educational visit is offered we will ask for a voluntary donation and NOT specify an amount. We appreciate parents/carers can only donate what they can afford.
    5. We will put a price freeze of the fees for childcare in our after school and holiday clubs for 12 months.

    Terracycle Crisp Packet Recycling Scheme

Thank you for all your help collecting empty crisp packets over the past three years. You have helped us raise funds for school and have reduced waste going to landfill through The Crisp Packet Recycling Scheme with TerraCycle and Walkers. Unfortunately, Terracycle have informed us that the Crisp Packet Recycling Scheme will close in April. Please be sure to bring any last crisp packets to us by April 8th at the latest so they can be sent to TerraCycle.

After this date, if you wish to keep recycling your packets, you can take them to your nearest supermarket with a flexible plastic collection point. You can find your nearest one via the Recycle Now Recycling Locator Map at www.recyclenow.com or on the Walkers website’s recycling page at www.walkers.co.uk/recycle

Once again, thank you for helping us collect thousands of crisp packets for recycling.

    Message In A Bottle Top

Another huge thank you to everyone who has collected bottle tops for our Earth Day Art project. We are still collecting as the competition deadline is not until May. Further details will follow but for now, please keep sending them in...any colour, shape or size!

Many thanks again for your continued support,

    Mrs Willis

    Eco Schools Coordinator

  • Goodbye

    Fri 01 Apr 2022

Today we say goodbye to our lovely chicks. We took receipt of the eggs 2 weeks ago and were responsible for incubating them and looking after the chicks during their first 10 days of life!

Children throughout the school have had opportunity to observe the chicks hatching and had lots of really good ideas of how we could look after them.

"This has been a wonderful experience for the children to see something very special. It has brought about wonderful discussion and problem solving. The children have used this experience in many curriculum areas....writing, maths, art and science."

    Mrs McMullen
