  • Ofsted News

    Mon 27 Feb 2023 Headteacher

Last half term we were delighted to have an inspector from Ofsted in school and share with the inspector all the great things we do at Burnside.

Our inspection was an ungraded inspection but we will still receive a short report that will be shared with parents. We have been informed that the report can take a few weeks to prepare but we look forward to sharing it with you as soon as we receive it.

    Smart School Uniform

The vast majority of children come to school in the correct school uniform, thank you for your support with this.  Here are some reminders for clarification.

    School Uniform
All children are expected to wear uniform. Items should be labelled with your child’s name to minimise lost property.

    • a red sweatshirt or cardigan;
    • a  white Polo shirt
    • plain grey or black school style trousers, skirt or shorts
    • black or white or red socks / tights;
    • plain black shoes. For safety, no open-toed shoes, high-heels, platforms or roller shoes. Trainers should only be worn on PE or outdoor learning days.
    • additional under-layers are encouraged for colder days.
    • In warmer months summer red and white checked dresses may be worn.

    PE uniform

PE kit / 'uniform' is worn for the whole day on a child's allocated PE day.

    • Black, red or white T-shirt
    • Black jogging bottoms
    • Black  PE shorts
    • Trainers

No make up, extreme hair styles, nail vanish, earrings or jewelry.

Please note that it is NOT a requirement to wear branded/logo clothing. We also advise that children do not come to school in expensive coats or trainers on PE days. We prefer joggers to be plain rather than expensive sports brands.

  • National Youth Charter as part of Safer Internet Day.

    Mon 06 Feb 2023

Last week our Digital Leaders came up with lots of ideas to contribute to the National Youth Charter as part of Safer Internet Day. The Safer Internet Centre are collecting ideas to be delivered to the government and the internet industry. Here our Digital Leaders' contributions for you to see.

    -----------------------------------------

    We’d like the government to….

Develop more effective laws around online safety and set clear standards for the internet industry.

Make sure the Online Safety Bill is implemented to do more to protect young people online.

Make better laws to prevent hackers and cybercrime.

Have more severe consequences for people who pretend to be someone else online.

We’d like the internet industry to…

On apps such as Tik Tok, have adverts which are linked to online safety to keep spreading important messages and raising awareness of how we can keep ourselves safe online.

Develop better ways of monitoring and filtering content, especially in 'restricted' mode.

Find better ways of implementing verification for age, and to ensure people are who they say they are.

At the bottom of apps and games, have the Childline number and CEOPs button to help make reporting concerns easier.

We’d like teachers and professionals working with young people to…

Do everything they can to keep helping young people know how to stay safe online.

Continue making sure that online safety is taught to children and young people of all ages.

Help children and young people understand the consequences of their actions online.

Give young people opportunities to use the internet in a positive way.

We’d like parents and carers to …

Understand that the internet is a great place and not all bad.

Know how and why we like to use the internet.

Check our devices regularly and help us keep ourselves safe.

Talk to us about how we use the internet and show an interest in our online life.

Help us when we need help.

We’d like children and young people to…

    Think before they act.

Do everything they can to protect themselves and keep themselves safe online.

Keep talking about life online and make sure everyone knows it's okay to ask for help if they need it.

Look out for each other and help keep each other safe.

  • Children’s Mental Health Week 2023 Monday 6th-12th February

    Fri 03 Feb 2023

As outlined in the School News sent out earlier this week, from the 6th to the 10th February, our school will be taking part in Place2Be’s Children’s Mental Health Week. This year’s theme is ‘Let’s Connect’ and we will be encouraging children (and adults) to think about how we can make meaningful connections that support our mental health. As you know healthy relationships with family, friends and school staff are important for children’s wellbeing, offering a strong protective factor against poor mental health.

Each day, some classes will be watching a short video / have an assembly and there will be some discussion points linked to the focus of the day. All classes will complete ‘Acts of Kindness’ throughout the week that have been carefully designed by our Year 6 Ambassadors. Children will also be taking part in range of other interesting and stimulating activities that support our mental health.

In addition to this, on Monday 6th and Tuesday 7th February our Key Stage 2 children will be taking part in an interactive session to explore the topic of loneliness and isolation, which is being led by our visiting guest, Simone Banks. Simone has worked on a number of programmes regionally and nationally which have a focus on key aspects that are important to and are impacting on young people. She has an interest in how people’s experiences can impact on a number of factors, and what can be done to challenge and make things better!

Your child will bring home ‘My Daily Mindful Moments’ calendar to help raise awareness and promote our Mental Wellbeing throughout February. We do hope that you will all make time each day this month to have a mindful moment and enjoy looking after your mental health.
