  • Show Racism the Red Card

    Fri 14 Oct 2022

This week our Year 5 and 6 pupils welcomed visitors from the Show Racism the Red Card Campaign. Mrs. Akram organised this event and we are very grateful to her.

Did you know Show Racism the Red Card originated in the North East of England and Newcastle United FC were the first club to support their work?

The staff from the project were so impressed with the attitude of our children to the messages that they were sharing that they rang school after the visit to inform us that they would like to donate tickets to the Newcastle Football match on the 19th October to a lucky winner from each year group they had visited!! As you can imagine there was great excitement in school.

Teachers placed all of the Year 5 and 6  children's names into a hat and a prize draw followed. The tension was high. The drum roll was loud.

The luckily winners were Billy and Ruby. They now have tickets to the Newcastle v Everton match.

We hope they have an amazing time and we wish Newcastle United the best of luck. "Howay the lads!!!"

  • Parent meditation workshop Tuesday 18th October @ 9.15am - Burnside Wellness Room

    Mon 03 Oct 2022 Headteacher

We would like to offer parents the opportunity to attend a session in our fabulous wellness room. It will be a great opportunity to experience first hand what your children  learn to help them cope with everyday worries and anxieties. We will  share with you some of the relaxation and concentration techniques we practise.

Our sessions are not affiliated to any religious beliefs or cultures. They simply provide tools to help us manage living in 2022!!!

You don't need to be flexible to participate (sitting on the floor isn't essential). All you need to do is wear comfortable clothing and be prepared to relax.

Due to the size of the room places are strictly limited and need to be booked by telephoning the school office.

Looking forward to seeing you there

  • Reading at Burnside

    Mon 03 Oct 2022

Reading daily improves vocabulary and language skills.

Children learn new words as they read. Subconsciously, they absorb information on how to structure sentences and how to use words and other language features effectively in their writing and speaking.

All pupils who attend Burnside are expected to read at home every day. This may be to a parent, other adult or independently, if able. Teachers will be checking pupils' reading records  signing them weekly to ensure that this is happening and will be following up with pupils and parents when it is not to see how we can support you.

As well as signing their reading every day pupils and parents are encouraged to discuss the meanings of any new words.

It was a pleasure to visit classes last week and see and hear so many pupils reading beautifully.

Due to our pupils commitment to reading some of our books are looking well worn which is actually a good thing!! We have invested several hundreds of  pounds today, replacing copies of the children's favourite titles and we thank you for looking after the books so well at home so they can be enjoyed by many children.
